By Bryan Hawthorne
The following was written by my brother, Bryan. It is a good reminder on walking in love.
Today was a day of listening and reflection.
There is a man that I work with and he and I just do not get along. We are like oil and water, fire and ice, and fish and ice cream. I think you get the point. We bring out the worst of each other. I cannot tell you why; it is just one of those things.
Today I was letting thoughts run wild in my mind on how I felt about this man, this brother in Christ, someone who Father loves. They were not good thoughts. I rehearsed arguments with him through my mind. And, then I heard Pastor Sam Carr say; “Are you walking in love?” He preached yesterday on the love of God and how we were re-created to walk in that same kind of love.
“But Bryan,” you ask, “Thoughts are not sinful, are they?” Martin Luther said, “You cannot keep birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair.” Let me add to that – “And laying and egg!” You see, when you keep on thinking and rehearsing, you are allowing that thought to grow and fester. You have a bird building a nest in your hair – mind – and you might wind up with egg on your face. Those thoughts could hatch into something ugly and ungodly.
However, there is good news. Philippians 2:5 tells us, “And consider the example that Jesus, the Anointed One, has set before us. Let His mindset become your motivation.” Have the mind of Christ—think on “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”, Philippians 4:8. We have the mind of Christ. We have the same Holy Spirit in us that He had.
What the Holy Spirit was telling me is this, I should try to see, and think, of this man the way God, His Father does. I am to love Him as His Father loves him.
There will be people who will will rub you the wrong way. It is up to you on how you respond and react to them. You can choose to allow evil to brew or choose to allow love to grow in your mind and heart. Nobody likes egg in their face. Let God’s love flow through to all those around you – to everyone.
Blessings to All.
