Let me burn out for God. After all, whatever God may appoint, prayer is the great thing. Oh, that I may be a man of prayer! Henry Martyn
The words have been echoing within my spirit for a couple of weeks now. “Wake up…Wake up! Wake up all you saints who have been at slumber. Wake up all you who are in Christ. The time for revival is upon us. The Lord is at the door of our hearts urging us to rise up from our beds. “
I was praying the other day when I allowed my thoughts to wander. I had been crying out to the Lord to help us, the Body of Christ, to wake from our sleep. As I spoke the words, I envisioned a cemetery with head stones placed delicately in a uniform fashion. However, on the ground, I saw bodies strewn haphazardly about.
I don’t remember the full context of my prayer, but I do remember thinking, “Lord, the Church is just like these bodies strewn about the cemetery. We are in such a state of slumber that there is no distinguishing between us and the deadness of the world.”
I dare not point my finger at you without first pointing the finger at myself. For years, I watched as events unfolded around me. Yet, without as much as a whimper, I accepted as fate what I believed must come to pass before the coming of our Lord. “Forgive me, Lord. How foolish I have been.”
Ahhh…but take joy. As I continued to pray, the Lord joined in with my thoughts and showed me the part I had missed. As I continued to look upon the sleeping bodies, I began to see a small stirring; a twitch here and there. Eventually, many of the sleeping rose from their slumber while many chose to remain asleep.
What I believe the Lord was showing me is that He is in the process of waking up the Body. Some will respond to His calling, while others will choose to remain asleep. For those who take seriously the charge to become watchmen on the walls, those who choose to stand their post and cry out for the lost and the dying, He will use to reach the world in a remarkable way. That is my prayer. That is my plea. Be blessed.
1 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. 4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5 The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. 6 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
