Hyperbole! Such an interesting word. In the polite sense, it is a word used to express the notion that a statement was overly exaggerated in order to emphasize a point. In the south, however, the word hyperbole is often replaced with a colorful word used to describe what might be found in a cow pasture. I will let you use your imagination for that one.
Now, the question remains. Was Jesus a practitioner of hyperbole? To be more exact, did Jesus use gross exaggeration when He said in Luke 19:40, “I tell you, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out?”
The God of Astronomy and Geology (Study of Star and Rocks)
At the time that Jesus made that remarkable statement, He knew something that no one else could possibly understand. Jesus, the creator of the heavens and the earth, knew that the universe, His wonderful creation, is actively and constantly praising Almighty God. From the musical harmonies produced by the sun, to the dancing of the stars, to the symphonic ringing of rocks, the universe is active in its glorifying of God.
Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
Praise Him in the heights!
2 Praise Him, all His angels;
Praise Him, all His hosts!
3 Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all you stars of light!
4 Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
And you waters above the heavens!
5 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For He commanded and they were created.
6 He also established them forever and ever;
He made a decree which shall not pass away.
Did you know that some rocks emit sound when struck; some like the sound of bells, some like the sound of gongs, and still others like the sound of drums. And then, some just make a thud sound. Why rocks certain noises is still unclear. Some believe it is due to metal content while others believe it is due to stress the individual rock is under. No matter the cause, there is no doubt that the rocks would praise God even if man did not. Be blessed.
