Help!  I’m a Christian and I’m Satisfied with My Life

By Patrick Hawthorne

light bulb“I’m a Christian and I’m satisfied with my life.”

Gasp! “You dare say you are a Christian and you are satisfied with your life?”

“Yep, that’s what I’m saying, alright.”

“But…How can that be?  Aren’t you supposed to suffer for the gospel?  Aren’t you supposed to bear many afflictions and look most miserable?  After all, my Great Grandma Nanny always said, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous.”  Of course she muttered that every time I did something wrong, but still…”

“Did she ever finish the verse?”

“Finish what verse?”

“The verse that reads, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous…”

“I thought that was all of it!”

“Nope…the whole verse says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, BUT the Lord delivers him out of them all.  Look it up, it’s Psalms 34:19.  Yes, in an ungodly world, those who choose to walk with God are going to face difficulties and evils that try to attack their faith.  BUT GOD, will deliver them out of all of them.”

“I don’t understand.  Grandma Nanny loved God with all her heart, but she always looked so miserable. That’s why I never wanted anything to do with religion.  Life is miserable enough without adding suffering in the name of religion to it.”

“Well…I don’t know your Grandmother’s story, but I do know what Jesus said.  “In Matthew 5:5, He said, “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are-no more, no less.  That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.” (The Message Bible)

“Are you really satisfied, or are you just acting the part?”

“Nope!  I’m really satisfied.  Don’t get me wrong, though.  Like your grandma, I once made myself miserable by trying to be all that I thought God wanted me to be. I just knew He had called me to be a world changer and I even made plans to play the part. However, it turns out that all those plans were simply mine and not His.  It wasn’t until I quit trying to be so pleasing to Him that I learned what truly pleases Him.”

“What is that?”

“He is pleased when I step out by faith and show His love to the world through my actions.  After all, actions speak louder than words.  The Bible says that I am to let my light, the light of Jesus in me, shine before all men that they may be able to see God through me and glorify Him. From there He opens the door for me to speak into the lives of people.

“That’s all?”

“Yepp…That’s it!  I don’t have to worry or fret about what I need to do for God.  I just make myself available to Him and everything works out according to His plans, not mine.

“It has to be more complicated than that.  Don’t you have to go and preach to people and all that stuff?”

“It’s interesting that you asked that…let me answer your question with a question, if you don’t mind.”

“Go ahead.”

“Ok…How did we get on this conversation?”

“Well, I asked you a question in reference to your comment about being satisfied with your life and you…Ohhhhh!  I kind of fell into that one, didn’t I?  Wow!  I actually started the conversation, didn’t I?”

“It was all designed in accordance with God’s plan for your life.  He loves you and wants you to be a part of His family.  If you would like me to pray with you to accept my Friend, Jesus, into your heart and life, I would love to do that!”

“I would like that!”

“So would I… Father, we come to You in the name of Jesus….”
