Loves Sweet Treasure

A proverbial play on Aesop’s Fables

by Patrick Hawthorne

A young man and an elderly man sat on the park bench beneath the canopy of the shade tree.  “Please tell me sir,” said the young man to his elder, “What is the secret to finding a good wife.”  The elderly man chuckled.  “Young man,” he said with a smile, “that question has plagued many a fellow since the dawning of time.  I don’t profess to know a lot, but this I do know.  A relationship built on outward beauty, like a photograph, will eventually begin to fade.  Likewise, a relationship built on possessions, like a precious metal will tarnish, rust, and waste away. If you are eager for a good wife, search for a woman you can trust…a woman who will bring out the good in you.  Search for a woman who will stand by your side in good times and bad times, times of lean and times of abundance.  Such a woman is a rare find indeed.  When you find her, love her like the treasure that she is…”

Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies.   Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. (Proverbs 31:10-12 NLT)
